Walkers are Welcome UK Network
Investigate this nationwide, initiative launched in 2007, to encourage towns and villages to be ‘welcoming to walkers’. The network has expanded rapidly and there are now over 100 locations across the UK that have joined this innovative community-led scheme to benefit from Walkers are Welcome accreditation.

Maps and Mapping
My preferred mapping site for many years has been www.streetmap.co.uk for ease of use and access to 1:25000 Ordnance Survey maps which show footpaths! It was also free to use! This was the site to which our walk grid references linked.
Unfortunately, in January 2026, www.streetMap.co.uk lost its internet connection in storm Gorretti and was only reconnected to the world in February. Over this period it lost its advertising income. "Crowd funding" by the public may allow it to continue for a year.
We changed our site to use openstreetmap which uses user generated site information and cannot be relied upon for the accurace of public footpaths.
February, we have now relinked to streetmap.
